ILP #1 “Participation” – Lynda

I chose to complete a Lynda course called Up and Running with Edmodo by Oliver Schinkten. This course covered everything a teacher would need to know about setting up an online classroom with Edmodo, and even provided videos to show parents and students on how to set up their accounts.

I think that this course provided a convincing argument about why Edmodo can be a powerful tool for teachers. It is similar to social media sites and it can be a fun and engaging way for students to interact in a safe and private educational environment.  This online classroom can also teach students how to communicate online in a respectful way, which is a very important skill in the digital age.

The course also provided lots of helpful tips about how to use Edmodo effectively in the classroom.
I learned that you can link your Google Drive and Edmodo library, which allows for easy transfer of files from your computer to your students. The following screenshot is just some of the many uses of this program in the classroom discussed in the tutorial.

I had never used Lynda before this project, and I am sad about that fact now because I have been missing out on a lot of free resources. I thought the Notebook feature was great; I love how it marks where on the video the note is from. Here are my notes from the course.

  1. I'm definitely going to look at this course because I always hear great things about Edmodo but I don't know how to use it. I did my first ILP on a course in Lynda too, and totally agree with how awesome it is. Now that I know about Lynda I am going to take full advantage of this resource in the future. I loved the screenshots that you included but it might have been cool to include a screenshot of your certificate of completion also! There is a tab on Lynda that says something like "My Certificates" and it shows all of the courses you have completed and pretty certificates too!

    1. Thanks for the tip; I didn't know about the certificate tab. I did notice that you can tweet out the completion badges.

  2. I designed an Edmodo for my ILP #1 and I so wish I had done the Lynda course first. Your reflection of the Lynda course really makes me want to check them out and learn more! I love the feature you mentioned about taking notes and it keeping track of what section of the video you took the note on. Do you think that you will create an Edmodo classroom of your own for ILP #2, now that you've completed a Lynda course on it?

    1. Savanah, you figured out my plan! I think the design ILP will be really easy after completing this course. I forgot to mention it in my blog, but Lynda also lets you download your notes in almost any format you want (I chose a PDF so it would look nicer attached to the blog).

  3. I chose to complete a Lynda course as well and I also loved the website. I chose a fairly broad course that includes a lot of different uses of technology in the classroom (it's called "Teacher Tips" if you're interested). I found myself clicking through several of the courses out of curiosity. Tutorials like that one you described for Edmodo are very well made and can be a great asset for a new teacher. It will be a challenge for us to stay up to date with all of the technological advancements over the years, but Lynda and other resources can help keep us informed.

    1. I'm definitely going to check out the course you found too. I agree, tutorials like this are really useful because it takes you step by step through setting up an Edmodo class. There were so many tutorials like this about other programs on Lynda too.

  5. I designed an edmodo as my first ILP project. I looked at the lynda courses when designing my classroom and found it really helpful. You definitely took a lot away from it. The lynda website is so helpful. I was not sure if I wanted to use edmodo in my classroom but seeing all you learned and all of its functions may have changed my mind.

  7. For my ILP, I also chose to complete a Lynda tutorial. I originally planned to do Edmodo but went ahead with Lynda, and you hit two birds with one stone! My tutorial was on personal branding through social media. I never knew of any resources like Lynda before nor would I give it the time of day, but after using Lynda, I see how much of an important resource it is. Lynda provides people with much needed tutorials and even tutorials for experts in certain fields, Lynda is completely beneficial for any type of person and opened my eyes to a useful resource for my future.
